Ancient Indians accorded great importance to Health and Wellness derived from the practice of Yoga and applications of the Vedic science of health, healing, the life-span – Ayurveda. This is highlighted in our next theme. The importance of health was emphasized by ancient seers as – Shareeramadyamkhalu dharma-sadhanam – The basis of all life’s endeavors is Swasthya – a sound body, the epitome of perfect health, which is pre-requisite for attainment of Spiritual Enlightenment. The entire life style in ancient India embodied and aimed at achieving physical, mental, spiritual economic, and social wellbeing aspiring to be enjoyed over a hundred autumns. Jeevaamasharadahshatam was the Vedic prayer chanted by everyone. The science of Ayurveda (Ayurvedic medical science) based on the great texts of Charaka (200 B.C.E), Sushruta (200 A.D.), Vagbhata (700 A.D) are briefly highlighted as one of the subthemes.
